Sheet moulding compound, which has an abbreviation of SMC or sheet moulding composite, is ready-to-mould fibreglass reinforced polyester material; these moulds are primarily used in compression moulding. The sheets are delivered in the form of rolls with a weight quantity of up to 1000 kg to control the chemistry and filler at the site of production, the resin and related materials are mixed.
Sheet Moulding Compound is both a process and reinforced composite material. They are manufactured by dispersing long strands of about >1” of chopped fibre, glass fiber or carbon fibre on a bath of thermoset resin. The longer fibres in SMC provide better strength properties as an output than standard Bulk Moulding Compound (BMC) products. Typical applications of products include demanding electrical applications, corrosion-resistant needs, structural components at an affordable price, automotive, and transit.
